Good news! Reports came out yesterday that defender Ante Jazic has been re-signed by Chivas USA. Terms were not disclosed, which is the league policy, so we won't know what his pay will be until the union releases salary figures in May 2012. Nevertheless, the fact that the Canadian international will be manning the left back position in 2012 should be music to Chivas fans' ears, as he led the team in assists in 2011 with seven. He also did a solid job defensively, and I think few would fault him for the major defensive lapses present at times in the backline last season.
While it was surprising to see Jazic on both the unprotected list for the Expansion Draft, and on the initial Re-Entry Draft list, I figured the front office would look to re-sign him. I'm glad he's returning to the club after a career year in 2011, and while I would still like to see another center back possibly brought in, the return of Jazic and the trade for right back James Riley from the Seattle Sounders (via the Montreal Impact) means Chivas should hopefully have good defensive coverage on the ends.More than that, however, is that if Jazic can continue to make runs up the wing and chip in crosses, and if Riley shows the same thing (which looks to be a good bet based on his past play) then Chivas may have good and consistent service from both sides of the field into the forwards. Now, Chivas need to sew up the forward position, by re-signing Juan Pablo Angel (if possible) and getting somebody to replace the recently-departed Justin Braun. Like I said, getting a center back may still be in the cards, as well as a defender or two to provide depth, considering it looks like Andrew Boyens and Mariano Trujillo may not be returning to the team. It could also be worthwhile to find a left back of the future, although I imagine Michael Lahoud will continue to serve in that role unless somebody else comes in. Whatever happens, we'll keep you posted.
