Chivatown Post: International Call-ups Edition

PORTLAND, OR - AUGUST 24: Congrats Ante! (Photo by Jonathan Ferrey/Getty Images)

Despite the loss against the Portland Timbers last night, there is some good news to report on the Chivas USA front. Goats have been called up to their national teams! That's right, perhaps the two best defenders on the team, Heath Pearce and Ante Jazic, have been called up by their respective countries. Pearce will be in the player pool for the United States' upcoming friendlies, first in familiar confines on September 2 against Costa Rica at the Home Depot Center, and then September 6 against Belgium in Brussels. Pearce was called up already by Jurgen Klinsmann, for the August 10 game against Mexico, but he did not see any game action. I would assume if he's being called up again he's bound to feature in at least one of the upcoming matches.

Meanwhile, Jazic has been recalled to the Canada squad in their upcoming 2014 World Cup Qualifiers. They are scheduled to play St. Lucia in Toronto on September 2, and Puerto Rico in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on September 6. Jazic was not selected to this year's Gold Cup squad for Canada, but Coach Stephen Hart is taking the qualifiers very seriously and called Jazic up to provide some much-needed experience to the squad. It is the first national team selection for Jazic since January 2010.

Congrats to both Pearce and Jazic! It should also be noted that former Goat Sacha Kljestan was also called up to the United States National Team. Kljestan has his doubters among USMNT fans, but he has been playing well this season for Anderlecht and is based in Belgium, so Klinsmann may have brought him in to provide scouting and experience regarding Belgian players and Belgium itself for the team.

The disappointing but not surprising news was that Dan Kennedy was not called up by Klinsmann. Only starting keeper Tim Howard and DC United keeper Bill Hamid were called up. Howard will probably start one or both matches, but Hamid is hurt right now (although he may be back to full strength by the time the games come) and is very much a work in progress. I say Kennedy deserves a call up. He's not young, but the U.S. has a long history of making goalkeepers wait a long time to get the starting job, so why not him?

In other news, Adam Serrano has reported on twitter that he spoke with Robin Fraser about forward Sammy Ochoa, who has reportedly signed with the league, and Fraser didn't seem too keen on Ochoa. Take a look at Serrano's twitter feed for more info. So maybe Chivas won't be getting Ochoa after all, which isn't surprising after the last month, is it?

And Chivas GM Jose Domene has been at it again on twitter today. First he tweeted, "A player to Europe? It took longer than expected, but we hope we can announce soon"

Then he finally gave us some news! Here it is: "The player going to Europe is Tristan Bowen. More details soon from "

So congrats to Bowen. He has hardly played this season, first because of an injury and second because he was buried on the depth chart, so he didn't look likely to stick around past this season anyway. Obviously, if he goes abroad and starts scoring like a maniac, that will be great for him, but look bad for Chivas. But best of luck to Bowen, and as we find more out we'll let you know the details.

So I'm not sure if that was the "player announcement" Domene has been hyping all week or if there is more news around the corner. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Finally, for those of you still smarting following the transfer window period, here's an article from Drew Epperley on his site WV Hooligan about the payrolls of all of the MLS clubs. Chivas is dead last on the infographic (provided by Business Insider), but the amount listed is equal to the San Jose Earthquakes and the Portland Timbers. I'm guessing Chivas is in fact dead last, but if not, bottom three is close enough. Even taking away the astronomical payrolls of the Galaxy and Red Bulls, Chivas are anywhere from a half-million dollars to nearly two million dollars below the rest of the league. Kind of puts it into perspective, doesn't it?

What do you think about the goings on around Chivas? Leave a comment below!
