Another coaching hire was announced this week, as the LA Strikers have appointed Tracey Kevins as their new head coach. Kevins, an England native, was previously the head coach of Barnet FC Ladies, in the English women's second division, and has also been a member of the English National Team's coaching staff since 2004. This will be her first job in the United States, where she will seek to continue building the Strikers.
When Kevins took over as Barnet's coach, the club was in the third tier of English football, but she helped take them into the second division after the establishment of the FA Women's Super League (English first division) in 2010-11, after winning the Southern division title in 2010. Barnet finished in fourth place last season, and won the FA Women's Premier League Cup in 2011, and also made it to the semi-finals of the FA Women's Cup in 2009-10 and 2010-11. Although she will be new to the American game, Kevins' previous accomplishments as a head coach indicate she will likely understand the nature of the W-League and the Strikers, and she will likely benefit from the deep talent pool in Southern California.
When asked about the appointment, Strikers GM Vanessa Valentine said the following: "We are very excited about having Tracey Kevins join the Strikers organization. She is a very accomplished coach with a storied club in England. We look forward to having her knowledge and expertise coming into next season."
Valentine concluded, "We look forward to having our fans come out and watch some great soccer." It looks like the Strikers are set to make a push up the table in the W-League in 2013.
