Townsend Opens Account: Chivas USA 1, Montreal Impact 0

It was a menage a Carson today for the Impact. So the Montreal Impact are training in Southern California, and they had a preseason match with the LA Galaxy this morning (Montreal won 3-0). Since Chivas USA was training nearby, everybody figured why not make it a double header? Ok, so this was planned a few days in advance, but it was still pretty relaxed by preseason standards. The teams played a 60 minute match, and Montreal used different players in the matches, obviously. But Chivas came away 1-0 winners on a second minute goal from Casey Townsend. He was set up by Ryan Smith, a scoring combination that one hopes will become familiar during the regular season.

Here was the starting eleven today for Chivas: Brian Rowe; David Junior Lopes, RJ Allen, Fabian Kling, Peter Vagenas, Ben Zemanski, Ryan Smith, Mario Ledezma, Cesar Romero, Casey Townsend, Miller Bolanos

In the second half, Patrick McLain (on trial, from Cal Poly Pomona) entered in goal, and Blair Gavin came on for Zemanski, who is getting back into training this week after recovering from a concussion. Chris Cortez played the final 20 minutes, coming on for Townsend, and Marky Delgado entered at halftime for Bolanos.

It was the first game action of the preseason for Bolanos, who it was said was out of shape when joining training camp. I'm slightly confused by this, as I thought he played into December with his previous club, LDU Quito. If that is the case, how could he have been so out of shape? Perhaps I don't know the entire story, but according to the official report on the club website, he played well today.

On the former Goats front, Gerson Mayen played against Chivas. I couldn't find a lineup of Montreal in the Galaxy match, so I don't know if Justin Braun featured, although Zarek Valentin played, and scored a goal, to the surprise of everyone, including Valentin himself.

Chivas will play the Galaxy Thursday at the HDC, although it is still closed to the public (blame Bruce Arena). The Galaxy has lost all but one of their preseason matches so far this year - can Chivas get a leg up on their rivals? I know, it doesn't really matter, win or lose, but a win would be a nice feeling. We'll let you know what happens after the game.
