Gamethread: Chivas USA vs. Club Tijuana, 2/22/12

It's almost time for the San Diego Clasico. This year, Chivas USA are taking on Club Tijuana at Torero Stadium (8 pm PST). The match is taking place at the smallest university in San Diego, the University of San Diego, and the setting will be intimate. I haven't found any word of streams or television broadcasts of the game, so I'll try to keep the match updated on here and perhaps twitter. I am also sitting in the stands tonight, so game stats may be a bit hazy, but bear with me.

If you missed it, take a look at the match preview for this game from this morning. It's a friendly, but it seems both teams will take it semi-seriously, at least at first.

Star-divide

With an hour to kickoff, the crowd initially looks to be pretty strongly pro-Xolos, but I know both the Black Army and Union Ultras are in to support the Goats. The proportion of fans will probably be more apparent at kickoff.

So, any predictions? Can the Goats gain bragging rights for the Northern side of the border? Will the Xolos look to impress the locals? Leave a comment below!

Arriba las Chivas!

I’m glad we got Romero signed heard good comments about him.

He’s on the bench tonight…I’m guessing he’ll come in, especially given his local ties.

Very high shot by Tijuana

YC to Minda

22nd minute: MInda gets a Yellow for a late tackle next to the sideline, and a (presumably Xolos) fan throws a full cup at him. 0-0

Crisis averted

27th minute: Chivas let Mauro Gerk through on a failed offside trap, then nearly let him score, only Kennedy and Gerk went to the same spot and Gerk couldn’t get a shot off. It was very nearly a costly team error, but still 0-0.

Shot by Bolanos wide

A couple of half-chances by Chivas leads to a rebound and quick shot by Bolanos, but he is on the wrong side of the post. 0-0

Who's controlling

What side has most of the possession?

by meximcivic on Feb 22, 2012 8:41 PM PST reply actions

In first half: first 10 minutes were open. Next 15 were controlled by Chivas. Then next 10 by TJ, and remainder of the half was back and forth.

YC to Smith

Jazic receives a rough tackle and stays down. Ref allows TJ to play on, and Ryan Smith complains enough that he gets a Yellow, presumably for dissent. 1-0

Decent chance for JPA

45th minute +: JPA gets the ball off a goal kick, heads for goal, but his shot is wide to the far post. A decent chance but he needed to be closer to goal there. 1-0

HT: Chivas 1-0 TJ

Dan Kennedy makes a big save at the very end of the half, and Chivas head into the break with a 1 goal lead off Lahoud’s effort. A sloppy half in many respects for the Goats defensively, but the goal was really nice.

YC comparison in the 1st half

Xolos: 1 yellow card

Chivas USA: 5 yellow cards. A couple were granted, as Chivas have been rather sloppy on many fouls, but a few were harsh to unbelievable.

Oh, and the crowd situation

The crowd is heavily pro-Xolos, but I swear to you, the Chivas fans were much louder, singing the entire half, while the Xolos fans mostly sang when a video camera was recording them (no joke). The fans who are from San Diego and who made the trip South are doing a great job tonight.

Red Card to Bolanos

Apparently Bolanos elbowed a player, so there’s not much the ref could really do there, except perhaps not hand out Yellows like candy in the first half.

Thanks for following the gamestream!

Really appreciate your following the stream tonight. Not the result we were looking for, obviously, but I hope this helped keep you updated on the game. Twitter became wonky during the second half for me, so hopefully you kept up on the details here.

And let’s do this again during the regular season. Especially for away matches where we’re watching on TV!
