MLS Power Rankings, Week 3: Chivas USA Get No Respect

The hive mind has spoken at SB Nation Soccer, and the latest MLS Power Rankings are out. As ever, the full rankings are on the left-hand side of the main page here at The Goat Parade for your viewing pleasure. But you want to know about Chivas USA, right? They beat the best team in the league, so they should have shot up the rankings, correct?

Not so fast. Chivas held steady at #17 again this week, ahead of the New England Revolution (who also recorded a solid victory) and the Montreal Impact. What's up with that? Is it just another case of Chivas not getting the respect they deserve?

On some level, yes. I actually moved them up a couple of spots myself this week, but the opinion that Chivas is not a very good team persists. I think there's a lot of optimism around the team after beating Real Salt Lake last week, and for good reason. But I can understand why the voters didn't move Chivas up the rankings. Rome wasn't built in a day, and if the Goats want to return to winning ways, they'll need to string a run of results together before the voters start moving them up. And don't trust power rankings that shift dramatically from week to week! It either means the voters are not looking at long-term form, or the voting pool is too small.

On the other end of the rankings, RSL still sits on top, although the Seattle Sounders are right behind. Chivas' next opponent, Sporting Kansas City, is in 4th. So if they beat the best team, they should smoke the fourth-best club, right? I kid, I kid.

The big mover was the San Jose Earthquakes, who moved from 15th to 12th after beating Toronto FC 3-0 in Toronto. Chris Wondolowski has started the season well yet again, and he seems to be powering his team to success in the early going.

So what do you think? Do Chivas need to show more before they move up the rankings, or were they disrespected by the hive mind? Leave a comment below!
