Good news! Chivas USA defender Ante Jazic was named to the preliminary Canadian Men's National Team roster Thursday. He is included in a 22 man roster for three upcoming matches: a friendly against the United States June 3rd in Toronto, a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Cuba in Havana June 8th, and a World Cup qualifier against Honduras in Toronto June 12th. Although the roster could be changed ahead of these matches, the quick turnaround, particularly regarding the World Cup qualifiers, means there's an excellent chance Jazic will see time in these upcoming matches.
The selection continues a resurgence in Jazic's international career, after he was recalled to the team last fall during the previous phase in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. The 36 year old full back helped Canada qualify for the latest round, and there is optimism that Canada may have a shot to qualify for their first World Cup since 1986. It will be a tough task, no doubt, but if Jazic can help Canada accomplish that, he will be an integral member of Canadian soccer history.
This season, Jazic has appeared in nine matches for Chivas, starting in all of them. He's played well again this season for Chivas, with the exception of the Colorado Rapids loss. He doesn't have any assists yet this season, although he should for his cross to Casey Townsend in the Real Salt Lake win. Nonetheless, Jazic has had a good start to the 2012 season, continuing his 2011 form, and he looks to have a good chance at playing in either fullback position for Canada. Well done Ante!
