Different Score, Same Result: Chicago Fire 2, Chivas USA 1

A goal in the 92nd minute by Marco Pappa gave the Chicago Fire a 2-1 win Friday night over Chivas USA. Although Chivas seemed like they were about to pick up their first point at home this season heading into extra time, the result is a gut punch that essentially cancels out a gritty, if inconsistent, performance.

There were very few positives to take coming out of the match for Chivas. They not only scored their first goal at home this season, but they also broke their infamous streak without a penalty kick, when Alejandro Moreno drew a foul just inside the edge of the box off rookie Austin Berry, and Juan Pablo Angel scored the resulting penalty in the 23rd minute. It was Chivas' first penalty since August 7, 2010. The other good thing coming out of the match was Dan Kennedy's performance. Although he could not preserve the draw, he made five saves on the night, all essential and frankly spectacular, but the rest of the squad could not score another goal or close out Chicago's players on both goals (Berry tied the game in the 25th minute off a lob into the box from Sebastian Grazzini).

In lieu of my typical match report shortly after the match, I'm going to sleep on this one, and discuss some of the key talking points tomorrow. Considering the emotional roller coaster resulting from the manner of the loss, I think a bit of distance might help consider what's most important to discuss in greater depth. Look for that post tomorrow.
