The hive mind at SB Nation is back at it, and this week, things are looking up for Chivas USA. In the latest SB Nation MLS Power Rankings, Chivas moved up two places to 13th. Although the Goats had two games and won the first of those, I think the voters overlooked their loss to the LA Galaxy last weekend and instead judged that the Montreal Impact and Colorado Rapids are worse teams than Chivas at this point. Directly ahead of Chivas is the New England Revolution and the Columbus Crew, and while both teams have had good results this season, there's no reason to believe why Chivas can't overtake them in the standings (if they can actually pick up points, of course).
Chivas are set to finish up the season series against the Portland Timbers Saturday. Portland is currently rooted to the bottom of the power rankings as well as the bottom of the Western Conference, so Chivas' chances look good. That said, the pressure is more or less off the Timbers at this point and they'll probably try some new things in order to find some positives in a very tough season. A Portland win Saturday wouldn't be an upset, it would "be so MLS." But as far as Chivas are concerned, they must take care of teams like Portland if they have any hope of gaining respect around the league and moving up the standings. The San Jose Earthquakes continue to stay at the top of the rankings despite losing to the Vancouver Whitecaps last weekend. Basically, at this point, all of the top teams look to have frailties, and San Jose appears to have the fewest. I wouldn't be surprised if they drop from the standings a bit during the rest of the season, but their staying power so far is an indication of their quality in 2012.
