Gordon Waived by Chivas USA

A roster move by Chivas USA is in the news today. Reserve defender Scott Gordon, signed in March, has been waived by the team. In my midseason evaluations of the Goats' defenders yesterday, I gave Gordon an incomplete grade, as he made only three league appearances for a total of 23 minutes, and started Chivas' first two U.S. Open Cup matches this year. Considering that small body of work, it was really difficult to determine Gordon's quality. One concern I had was that it was entirely unclear what his best position was. He played primarily as a right back, especially in the USOC games and in preseason, but there were comments that he could also play as a center back if necessary. Now, he won't get that chance for Chivas.

There could be a couple of reasons for this move, and we'll have to see if Chivas make any additions to the roster during the open transfer window. First, they may have simply decided that Gordon was not going to see much time, and rather than keep him on the books all season, they decided to cut ties with him before they were on the hook for his entire salary. It's a bit harsh, but in the business side of the game, moves like that are sometimes necessary. For what it's worth, Gordon wasn't making very much, as he was listed as making $44,000.04 when the salary figures were released in May.

Another reason Gordon may have been cut is because Chivas are about to sign another player or two, and want to free up Gordon's salary to put towards another player. This would seem to be a necessary step, as Chivas don't actually have very much depth in defense. They have no backup to James Riley at right back, they only have one extra center back in John Valencia, and sometime defender Jorge Villafana can back up Ante Jazic at left back. Frankly speaking, that leaves Chivas' depth in defense painfully thin, and the front office needs to seriously consider bringing in a player or two to provide reinforcements, lest they be caught out if Riley or two center backs go down.

At any rate, we wish Gordon the best of luck in his career, and we hope Chivas' knack for winning when he featured will not leave with him.
