MLSsoccer.com has been running a "24 Under 24" list of the best more-or-less young players in the league the last few years, and they are in the middle of counting down the names on the 2012 list. Today, Chivas USA forward Juan Agudelo was revealed as the number 13 player on the 2012 list. So far, he's the only Chivas USA player on the list, and I think it's safe to say he'll more than likely be the only one, unless my advocacy on twitter to vote for Marvin Iraheta because he was on the ballot despite never playing a minute professionally was successful.
Last year, Agudelo was listed as the number two player on the list, only behind Brek Shea. Has the hype subsided, has the additional time on the field exposed some of his weaknesses, or is he suffering from the Chivas effect, in which anything Chivas-related is given less stock around the league? Frankly speaking, it is hard to say. He certainly looks promising, but the critiques in his game listed in this year's write-up are all valid. I think most of us would have expected him to have more than two goals in league play for Chivas, but the entire team's scoring woes plus the time he was dealing with a knee injury this summer certainly set him back. Still, he's third on the team in league goals (gulp).
By the way, the only other Chivas player to be on the "24 Under 24" list was Justin Braun in 2010, clocking in at 10th, although current Chivas players Tristan Bowen (13) and Ryan Smith (12) were on that year's list as well.
