Show Me the Way out of San Jose: Chivas USA 0, San Jose Earthquakes 4

In a battle of first against...definitely not first, the first-placed team won Sunday, as the San Jose Earthquakes demolished Chivas USA 4-0 on the back of three free kick goals. Despite three big saves from Dan Kennedy and some good chances in the first half from Juan Agudelo, the Goats continue their recent slide, and the hopes that once carried the team through the middle third of the season have evaporated. Now the question seems to be if Chivas can stay out of last place.

The scoring started early for the Quakes, with center back Victor Bernardez scoring a free kick that curled around Chivas' three-man wall in the 11th minute. It was Bernardez's second goal of the season, and was an impressive strike. Agudelo had a terrific chance to tie the game up a few minutes later on a breakaway against San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch, but the shot was blocked, on a call that appeared to have perhaps been a handball outside the box by Busch. But no luck turned for Chivas.

San Jose doubled their lead in the 39th minute, when Chris Wondolowski set up midfielder Simon Dawkins to slot the pass past Kennedy. The score remained 2-0 for much of the game, but Ramiro Corrales capped off the night with a pair of free kick goals in the 71st and 81st minutes, respectively. His second goal came as nobody was looking, and it was unclear if Corrales' shot should have been allowed to stand or not, but by that point, it didn't matter very much in the grand scheme of things.

All this scoring by San Jose and despite starting, Alan Gordon didn't even get involved. His contributions weren't needed. Meanwhile, Chivas are reeling, and it is getting increasingly difficult to know if they can even win a game at this point, let alone multiple games. We'll have more coverage on the match and Chivas' form coming up, but suffice it to say, there are no breaks in sight, and it is frustrating to watch.
