The Road Ahead: Looking at Chivas USA's Remaining Schedule

The old adage is that when a team has a tough loss, they dust themselves off and should look ahead to the next match. Well, Chivas USA have been facing a lot of tough losses lately and need to do more dusting off than many would like to see. They've got nine games left this season - can they turn the form around?

Let's take a quick look at the rest of Chivas' schedule this season, and what their opponents' form might mean for a struggling team. Does it get any easier from here?

In a word, no. But let's go through the games and see what's coming up:

Date Opponent H/A Current Rank in Conference Points Obtained by Chivas in 2012
9/8 Seattle Sounders A 3rd 1 (out of possible 6)
9/15 San Jose Earthquakes H 1st 1 (out of possible 6)
9/19 Columbus Crew A 5th 0 (haven't met in 2012)
9/23 D.C. United A 6th 0 (haven't met in 2012)
9/29 Real Salt Lake H 2nd 3 (out of possible 6)
10/3 Vancouver Whitecaps A 5th 1 (out of possible 6)
10/7 FC Dallas H 6th 0 (out of possible 3)
10/20 Colorado Rapids H 9th 1 (out of possible 6)
10/28 FC Dallas A 6th 0 (out of possible 3)

Well, here's the good news: the games against Columbus and D.C. are unknowns. Chivas could match up well against them, or not. Columbus has been improving in their form, especially since the transfer window this summer. D.C. are talented, but they've been slumping lately, so that's promising I suppose.

But with the exception of the Rapids, all of the other teams are higher than Chivas on the table. That has to be concerning, along with the fact that Chivas have only earned seven of a possible 33 points on these teams so far this season. Now, all teams, even the best, drop points over the course of a season, but Chivas have only picked up 21 percent of the possible points. On the season overall, in comparison, Chivas have earned 37 percent of the possible points to this point in the season, so these opponents are a tough bunch.

Five of the remaining games are on the road, and Chivas have played better on the road this season (they've picked up just over 60 percent of their points away). But it is clear that no game on the schedule is "easy." Chivas will need to work hard, get their heads right, and play well as a team if they want to end the season on a positive note.
