Chivas USA to play New Zealand in closed friendly Saturday

New Zealand is awaiting their CONCACAF playoff opponent for entry into Brazil 2014. - Teaukura Moetaua

Chivas USA will be hosting a friendly against the New Zealand national team this Saturday after all, but it isn't open to the public, unfortunately.

Earlier this week we had mentioned that the hurricane charity relief effort, the 2013 Los Angeles Cup tournament, which would feature Chivas USA and seven other clubs, including the New Zealand national team, had been canceled. Despite the cancellation of the tournament however, the team and Major League Soccer have since released news that the Goats will still be participating in a friendly against New Zealand (aka the All Whites) this Saturday as originally stated.

The game will no longer be at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Instead the friendly will take place at the stadium complex in Carson. However, the game, scheduled for 2 pm PT, is closed to the public and will only be open to the media, which is a bummer for fans looking to finally see the Goats participate in a friendly match of any sort open to the public in California this year.

If you were disappointed the tournament was canceled you were not alone. Mexico's Liga MX club Queretaro, one of the two clubs from Mexico to take part in the tournament places blame on New Zealand soccer federation for pulling out.

Queretaro released a statement declaring,"The New Zealand federation withdrew unilaterally from the commitment after formally confirming they were taking part."

Queretaro further announced it will take "the necessary measures to make known our dissatisfaction before the pertinent judicial bodies and ask for a sports sanction through the International Football Federation (FIFA)."

We don't have all the facts, but is very sad to see a charity soccer event devolve into finger-pointing and to potentially involve FIFA and potential punitive actions.
