Home Alone: Updating Chivas USA's stadium prospects

Chivas USA has familiarity with Titan Stadium in Fullerton from playing USOC matches - USA TODAY Sports

Chivas USA has stadium options, but does team management have the ambition to see it through?

I miss Scott French's regular beat blog on Chivas USA. Definitely a case of not knowing what you've got 'til it's gone. So I perked up when I saw his column on the MLS website discussing Chivas' relocation prospects. It's part of an ongoing long form series call The Word, an entertaining and often thought provoking column from the league's website.

It's no secret that Chivas are--wait for it--seeking new spots for grazing. With the team's lease at the StubHub center up at the end of next season. Finding for playing grounds for 2015 is becoming more and more of a priority with each passing day.

The five possible landing spots French referred to are: Weingart Stadium (Monterrey Park), Titan Stadium (Fullerton), Santa Ana Stadium, Fairplex (Pomona, the LA County fairgrounds), and the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. However other possibilities can extend as south as Huntington Beach (Lebard Stadium), as east as Ontario and as north as San Clarita.

It's good to have options. But sometimes options complicate the decision making process, to the overall detriment.

The above Google Map shows the vicinity of possible destinations.

While the importance of having a stadium to create and foster an identity, the onus is on Chivas to move ahead and make emboldened gestures of intent.

Heretofore, Chivas USA's stadium aspirations have been best described by Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido (at least regarding Santa Ana in particular): "They don't have interest in moving forward with the project. So at this point it's just more golf out at Willowick."
