Eddie Johnson goes to D.C. United, Chivas USA possibly dodge a bullet

Steven Bisig-US PRESSWIRE

Chivas missed out on EJ, but might that be a blessing in disguise?

Although Chivas USA were reportedly in the sweepstakes for unsatisfied Seattle Sounders striker Eddie JohnsonD.C. United traded for the U.S. Men's National Team player Wednesday. The Sounders received an unknown amount of allocation money in exchange for the wantaway forward.

Johnson is expected to get a new deal with D.C. that is projected to make him a Designated Player, something he wanted as he publicly began complaining over his relatively small salary ($150,000 base salary in 2013). As a USMNT regular of late, that complaint appeared to have legs.

Yet Johnson's departure from Seattle was rather acrimonious, to say the least. Charles Boehm reported Wednesday that Johnson was a major disruption in the Sounders locker room, leading to the money quote, "he's simply the worst."

So on one hand, Chivas missed out in getting a player who would undoubtedly improve their finishing, but they also apparently missed out on a guy who remains a head case. For a team that is (theoretically) rebuilding, hopefully this time with something that sticks, head cases probably wouldn't help the team's cause.

In the meantime, Chivas still have work to do, between picking up another quality forward, getting some real fullbacks and more center backs, and generally strengthening the team.
