Chivas USA defender Carlos Bocanegra was named to the U.S. Soccer All-Time U.S. Men's National Team Friday, in honor of the federation's 100th anniversary. He is one of five active players on the list, and three of them currently play club ball in MLS (Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey are the other two in MLS, Steve Cherundolo plays in the Bundesliga, and Brad Friedel plays in the English Premier League).
The full list:
GK: Brad Friedel
D: Steve Cherundolo, Marcelo Balboa, Eddie Pope, Carlos Bocanegra
MF: Landon Donovan, Tab Ramos, Claudio Reyna, Clint Dempsey
F: Brian McBride, Eric Wynalda
Bocanegra has amassed 110 caps for the national team between 2001 and this year, putting him in a tie for seventh all-time in appearances for the United States. He also served as captain of the USMNT between 2007 and earlier this year. Although he didn't get called into the national team for most of the year, he has not retired on an international level and could receive call-ups yet. With his vast experience, including two World Cups, it is possible he could be on the plane to Brazil.
If that's to happen, of course, Bocanegra and Chivas USA will need to get off to a strong start in the 2014 season. We'll see. In the meantime, congratulations to Bocanegra on the honor!
