Report: Adolfo "Bofo" Bautista signs with Chivas USA

Jeff Zelevansky

The rumor that never dies is back, and might be real this time.

Various outlets, including ESPN Deportes (Spanish) and Medio Tiempo (Spanish), are reporting that midfielder Adolfo Bautista, popularly known as "Bofo," signed for Chivas USA Friday. According to the reports, official word should come down as soon as MLS accepts the contract agreement.

Bautista, 34, has played sporadically in recent years, suiting up most recently for Ascenso MX side Atletico San Luis. He was once one of the most dynamic attacking players in the Mexican Primera, becoming a fan favorite at Chivas de Guadalajara, where he has had two stints (2004-07, 2010-11), Jaguares de Chiapas (2007-09), and even Queretaro (2011-12), where a short stint led to a playoff berth for the Gallos Blancos.

Bautista was also a Mexican international, earning 38 caps, most recently in the 2010 World Cup.

Rumors (and hopes) of Bofo coming to Chivas USA have cropped up for the last five years or so, although this time it looks more substantiated than previous reports. Of course, Bofo could be pulling some elaborate PR stunt in order to work his way into the sport (I kid...mostly).

Although I will reserve judgment on this until official word comes down, I would say that the information in the ESPN Deportes article, which said that Bofo wanted to return to Chivas de Guadalajara, but Jose Luis Real didn't think he was good enough, is very concerning. For those of us hardy souls who are waiting for the turnaround of Chivas USA, sending literal Chivas rejects to the MLS side is probably not going to do much good, and might in fact do considerable harm.

But that's jumping ahead. We'll let you know if we hear more about this report, and for those of you eagerly awaiting Bofo's debut in MLS, it looks like your time has come.
