Report: Wilmer Cabrera is a candidate for Chivas USA head coach

Cabrera: Goats' new man? - Doug Pensinger

Is Chivas getting close to their next manager?

Potentially big news for Chivas USA this afternoon, courtesy of MLSsoccer.com. Diego Pinzon reports that Colorado Rapids assistant coach Wilmer Cabrera has been contacted by Chivas to be the Goats' next head coach. This comes from Cabrera himself, who is mulling over his options with his contract with the Rapids set to run out at the end of the year.

Cabrera, 46, is a former player who got his start in his native Colombia, before moving to Costa Rica and finishing his playing days in the U.S. lower leagues with the Long Island Rough Riders before retiring in 2005. He was also a Colombian international, featuring at the World Cup and several Copa America tournaments.

Since then, he has taken up coaching, working in the youth ranks before becoming the U.S. Men's National Team U-18 and U-17 coach 2007-12. The U-17s went to two straight World Cups under Cabrera, making it to the knockout stages in each tournament. After being fired from that position, Cabrera went on to join Oscar Pareja's coaching staff with the Rapids in 2012.

According to Pinzon, Cabrera says he's been offered a new contract to stay in his position in Colorado, in addition to receiving interest from Chivas.

Cabrera did indicate in the article, however, that he's inclined to stay with the Rapids.

If he does take the Chivas job, Cabrera would seem to tick several boxes. He's Latino, presumably bilingual, has a history in coaching in MLS and the United States more broadly (his experience with young players could prove especially useful to Chivas USA and its Academy system). Such a move would indicate Chivas management understanding that MLS experience is probably pretty necessary in helping to turn around the club.

Obviously, we'll let you know if we hear more about this report in the coming days. In the meantime, what do you think of this potential move? Let us know in the comments below!
