Chivas keep the preseason streak alive with a rainy draw.
10 days after first meeting in preseason action, Chivas USA and K-League side Gangwon FC met again Tuesday night at Cal State Fullerton, and this time played to a 0-0 draw. Obviously, the second result wasn't the 7-3 demolishing like last time, but Chivas remain unbeaten in 2013 preseason action, and perhaps keeping two consecutive clean sheets shows good progress in solidifying the defense ahead of the coming season.
Chivas started the following group tonight: Dan Kennedy; Carlos Borja, Steve Purdy, Bobby Burling; Josue Soto, Jose Manuel Rivera, Daniel Antunez, Carlos Alvarez, Marky Delgado; Jose Correa, Juan Agudelo
9 of the 11 starters were different from last Friday's match against the Colorado Rapids in Las Vegas, with only Kennedy and Borja getting the nod two games in a row. Chivas USA coach Jose Luis Sanchez Sola may have settled on his depth chart, but it appears he is still evaluating players and where they compare ahead of First Kick March 2 against the Columbus Crew.
Tim Melia replaced Kennedy in the second half, and Patrick McLain also played some time in the second half at goal. Emilio Orozco came on for Borja in the second half, and Tristan Bowen subbed in for Correa at the same time. Julio Morales replaced Agudelo at the hour mark.
With the draw, the Goats are 4-0-2 in the preseason. I hate to sound like a broken record, but while seeing results is promising, they ultimately mean nothing. If they usher in good results during the regular season, fantastic! If the team proceeds to lose on a regular basis, however, then this preseason will have been a false dawn. We'll see which scenario it is!
