As the W-League prepares itself for its 2013 season, the LA Strikers have been making strong moves in the offseason to prepare themselves for their opening match on May 18th.
Many of their additions this season have come from international locations. In December, the team announced the hiring of English head coach Tracey Kevins. Kevins had been an assistant coach with the English Women’s National Team for eight years prior to joining the Strikers. Additionally, she was head coach for Barnet FC Ladies, and was instrumental in the team’s success in the FA Women’s Premier League National Division. Her team won the FA Women’s Premier League Cup in 2011.
Another addition from Barnet FC Ladies is central midfielder Victoria Boardman. A member of the English U-18 Women’s National Team, Boardman was part of Kevins’ team that won the Women’s Premier League in 2011. Another player joining the team from across the pond is Gemma Bryan. She most recently played for Charlton Athletic, where she has been one of the top scorers in the Southern Premier League.
The team has also signed Kristy Moore, an Australian and English international. Her previous club experiences include Barnet FC and Fulham in England, and IF Troya and Stabaek in Norway. When she left Norway, she was 5th on the all-time scoring list for the Toppserien league. She brings a great deal of veteran experience to this team and will hopefully help guide the team to success. She will wear the #23 jersey. Striker Ann Marie Tangorra will also be joining the team this year. A recent graduate of Cal State Fullerton, Tangorra has previously played in the W-League with Santa Clarita Blue Heat (2011) and Pali Blues (2012). She won Western Conference Championships with both teams.
This will not be the end of the signings for the Strikers. General Manager Vanessa Valentine said that the team will be signing 8 international players for the season. The full roster, however, will not be completed until after their open tryouts. The team will be holding open tryouts on Friday April 5th from 7pm-9pm and on Sunday April 7th from 1pm to 6pm. For more information, check out the Strikers’ website.
The team will also be involved in a double header with Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center on June 29. The Strikers will kick off first against local rivals Pali Blues at 5:30 p.m. before the Goats play their MLS match against the New England Revolution at 7:30 p.m. Be sure to get there early and support both the men and women!
The LA Strikers kick off their season on May 18th against the Pali Blues away at Palisades High School. Their home opener is on June 5th against the Seattle Sounders at Occidental College. For ticket and match information, please visit their website.
