The people have spoken, and a rather-unexpected choice gets the overwhelming nod for The Goat Parade's Player of the Month Award. Defender Steve Purdy won in a landslide, garnering 58 percent of the vote this month.
Purdy has been lower on Chelís' depth chart this season, and he's struggled with lingering injuries through the first part of the season. He made his debut as a Chivas USA player in the Goats' third and final game of the month, starting and playing the full 90 minutes in defense April 27 against the San Jose Earthquakes. Although the result was a 2-2 draw, it was Chivas' best result of the month, and Purdy did look solid playing in relief of Bobby Burling, who was suspended for the match.
Burling was back in the starting lineup for the subsequent match, last week against Sporting Kansas City, and original starter Walter Vilchez is nearing his return from a knee injury, perhaps as soon as this week. What will that mean for Purdy? It is always hard to say, but given the need to rotate the defenders so far this season, it seems safe to say that Purdy will get more opportunities.
Congrats to Steve on the honor! And don't forget to vote when the May poll comes around!
