Rumor: Cubo Torres on his way to Chivas USA?

Could Cubo come to CUSA? - Stephen Dunn

Another player from Chivas, but possibly the most intriguing one yet.

Here's a rumor that is very much speculative at the moment, just to warn you.

Chivas de Guadalajara forward Erick Torres, known widely as "Cubo," is reportedly out at Chivas. Yesterday, rumors swirled during the Liga MX player draft that Torres was on his way to Liga Ascenso (2nd division) side Correcaminos (the same team that Chelís coached prior to joining Chivas USA). But perhaps that is not the case, as Mexican site claims today Torres is on his way to joining Chivas USA (Spanish).

Here is the initial caveat: this is the only source claiming the move at the moment, so this has to be taken with a rock of salt. It is more of a wait-and-see story than a report even remotely close to confirmed.

Now, if this move did somehow come through, would it be to Chivas USA's benefit?

Torres is only 20, and has been a successful Mexican youth international, most notably playing a leading role for El Tri in the 2011 U-20 World Cup, where Mexico finished third.

He's played for Chivas since 2010, when he broke through in a hurry and instantly garnered comparisons to Chicharito. In fact, many believed Torres was more polished at his age than Chicharito had been.

He started out strongly for Chivas, but has faded more and more as the seasons have gone by. In the 2013 Clausura, he only made four league appearances, scoring no goals. In fact, with Chivas looking to blood even younger players and struggling mightily last season in particular, it is rather curious how much Torres' stock had dropped at the club.

So Torres could be a player who simply peaked as a teenager, and may not reach those early heights again. But among the players Chivas USA's front office have brought in from Guadalajara, Torres has to be the most intriguing. He could benefit from a change of scenery, albeit one still inextricably connected to Guadalajara, while Chivas USA' s attack has died since Juan Agudelo got hurt and was subsequently traded. I say take a flyer on him, since the possible upside could be far more than anybody in MLS would anticipate.

Again, this is a rumor, and we have to see if this story has any legs before proceeding with the discussions of his merit with the Goats.
