Chivas USA's Gabriel Farfan, Tristan Bowen suspended one game each by MLS

Was the punishment fair or not?

In news that shouldn't really surprise anybody, two Chivas USA players have been suspended by the MLS Disciplinary Committee. On Friday, the league announced that both midfielder Gabriel Farfan and winger/forward Tristan Bowen were suspended one game and fined for their actions in the Goats' 1-1 draw against the Colorado Rapids last weekend.

Farfan stepped on Rapids defender Shane O'Neill's leg in the first half of the match, drawing a straight red card. The Disciplinary Committee ruled that Farfan's actions "endangered the safety of his opponent," which, yeah, it did. So that means Farfan has to sit two games. The amount of the fine was undisclosed, which is standard when it comes with suspensions.

Somewhat surprisingly, Bowen received the same punishment as Farfan, despite doing something that is largely considered completely reprehensible, namely, spitting at an opponent. He did that, and after denying it initially after the game, he later reversed course and said he apologized to the player he spit at, Chris Klute. The Disciplinary Committee termed it "violent conduct" and an "intolerable act of disrespect," but he got just one extra game and an undisclosed fine.

The additional sanctions on Farfan and Bowen mean both players will be ineligible for the Goats' next two games, Wednesday vs. FC Dallas and August 25 against the New York Red Bulls. If the team does not decide to tack more games on, they'll be available for selection again September 1 against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
