Reserves: Chivas USA defeat Colorado Rapids 1-0

Chivas are 2-for-2 so far this week in games!

Chivas USA continued their MLS Reserve League campaign Tuesday with a match against the Colorado Rapids on the road, and won 1-0. Martin Ponce scored the winner in the 50th minute, after following up his own rebound, and the Goats picked up a clean sheet to preserve the win. The win splits the reserve league series with the Rapids, after falling to them 2-1 in the last game.

Here was Chivas' starting lineup for the game: Patrick McLain; Mario Ledezma, Bobby Burling, Steve Purdy, Josue Soto; Marvin Iraheta, Gabriel Farfan, Jose Gomez, Tristan Bowen, Martin Ponce; Daniel Delgado

Ledezma and Gomez are from the U-23 team, while Delgado is listed as being part of the U-23 team, but he is evidently a new addition to that team since the state title.

Bryan de la Fuente replaced Gomez in the 74th minute, while Jacob Barron, also listed as a U-23 player, but apparently new to the squad as well, entered the game in the 30th minute, replacing Burling.

Although he didn't see any action, it is interesting to note that the backup goalkeeper for this match was Derby Carrillo, a 25-year-old who is a California native. He was part of the 2012 U.S. Open Cup squad for Cal FC, Eric Wynalda's amateur team that made a run in the tournament that year. From there, Carrillo played for at least a time with Salvadorian club Santa Tecla, and has also been called up to El Salvador's full senior squad and received caps this year. He was also part of the Gold Cup squad, alongside Steve Purdy, this year.

According to Chivas USA's twitter feed, Carrillo was called a trialist, which is interesting at this point in the season for a couple of reasons. While the Goats are theoretically a bit thin with Tim Melia's season-long back injury, they haven't had to go to a third 'keeper, with Dan Kennedy taking the lion's share of minutes and McLain playing when DK was red carded and suspended this year.

Both Kennedy and Melia have been signed to contract extensions this season, although the length of Melia's is somewhat unclear. That, coupled with McLain playing well enough in his game action this season, makes me wonder if Chivas really need a 'keeper at this point. In that case, they could be looking at Carrillo as a favor to him, or they could be thinking ahead to next season. We'll have to see on that front, of course, but interesting stuff looking ahead.
