Chivas USA and abolishing the Supplemental Draft

Jonathan Bornstein is one of the rare supplemental picks that bore fruit for Chivas USA - Elsa

According to Dan Karell on Soccer by Ives , MLS is reportedly looking to do away with the Supplemental Draft. How will this affect the Rojiblancos? Not as much as you might expect.

In this year's Supplemental Draft, Chivas USA had five supplemental picks but opted to use only three of them. Chivas selected defenders Jose Diaz and Joe Franco and forward Paul Islas. None of whom signed with Chivas USA. Islas is playing for the Charlotte Eagles is USL Pro but I couldn't find information about Diaz or Franco after a very brief Google search.

How does this affect Chivas USA going forward to the 2014 draft? Well there's good news and there's bad news.

The Good

Chivas USA acquired a second-round selection in the 2014 SuperDraft from D.C. United. That pick is unaffected.

The Bad

In acquiring Gabriel Farfan from the Philadelphia Union, Chivas surrendered a first-round selection in the 2014 SuperDraft. Also unaffected.

The Ugly

In order to part ways with Shalrie Joseph, Chivas has given the Seattle Sounders:

  • A second-round selection in the 2014 SuperDraft
  • A second-round selection in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft
  • The #3 spot in the 2013 MLS Allocation (read: Clint Dempsey)
  • Terribly, gruesomely unaffected

When you look at how Chivas USA is acquiring players and their recent Supplemental Draft selections, it's hard to feel that Chivas USA executives are sweating this change. It is concerning though that Chivas USA will finish near the bottom of the league table and yet will have a single second round pick to use to improve the squad.
