Ex-Chivas Sacha Kljestan, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and Carlos Vela and their respective clubs have learned their draws for the next stage of the CL.
Group A will feature a Mexican showdown with Chicharito's Manchester United versus Vela's Real Sociedad, at Old Trafford on October 23rd.
Man U has a primer on Sociedad and know well who their main threat is.
In Group C, Kljestan's Anderlecht will face Olympiacos, Paris Saint-Germain, and Benfica.
Of all the players in the CL with Chivas ties, none is faring better than Carlos Vela, who almost single-handedly led Real Sociedad past Lyon. In Sociedad's second match with Lyon, Vela scored two goals, and one was reminiscent of a Diego Maradona dashing attack. Did you see how that play started on the other half of the pitch? Yeah, Chepo de la Torre did too, and he's been kicking and slapping himself all week (and all qualifiers) for not being able to come to terms with Vela and bring him into national team camp. If he's not slapping himself, he should be right about now, especially with games against Honduras, the U.S. and Costa Rica looming.
El Tri minus Vela, but with Argentine-born and nationalized Mexicans Christian Gimenez and Damian Alvarez, takes on Honduras at Estadio Azteca this Friday and hopes to prevent an Aztecazo (a home loss). A loss at home and El Tri will have to sharpen their knives for a battle (aka repechaje) with the Oceania representative for a spot at Brazil 2014.
The Yanks visit Costa Rica also this Friday. A win for the Ticos will put them in first place in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying, and the U.S. in second behind by one point. An American victory will very likely cement a first place finish for them in the hexagonal.
Back at home, Chivas USA take on the Sounders at Seattle today at 7 PM PST on MundoFox 22. The Rebaño Angelino, the one with more LA area-bred starters than the Galaxy, now has two home channels (in English on KDOC) on antenna television in LA, which is quite a feat considering that The Others require viewers to have Time Warner Cable Sportsnet, or Time Warner Cable Deportes, for good measure. Hopefully for Chivas, they'll continue these partnerships going into next season and beyond.
