On the heels of their announcement this week that Wilmer Cabrera was named head coach of Chivas USA, the team publicly revealed their 2014 preseason schedule Friday. Training camp will open January 27, and the team is currently scheduled to train in town until February 14. While there will definitely be scrimmages and friendlies in that window, there's no word of those at this point, though likely opponents will be local college and lower league sides.
Following that initial training period, the Goats will travel to Las Vegas for the rematch of their friendly last season in the same city, against the same opponent, the Colorado Rapids. Last year, Chivas spanked the Rapids 3-0, but then the Rapids had a good regular season and Chivas did not. The game this year will take place February 16. It has been on the game organizer's webpage for weeks, but Chivas only confirmed the friendly today.
Then after that game, Chivas will make the short trip to Arizona for the Desert Diamond Cup. They will be in Tucson February 17-March 2, and will play four friendlies, against FC Tucson, New England Revolution, and the Rapids once again. The opponent in the fourth match will be determined by the results in the previous matches. Chivas' involvement in the preseason tournament has been known since shortly after their friendly against FC Tucson last year.
The team opened training camp to the public last year with Chelís in charge, but it is unclear if that will happen this year with Cabrera calling the shots. Stay tuned on that.
