2014 MLS Draft: Finding valuable contributors after the first round

Both Sandoval and Evans came out of the second round. - USA TODAY Sports

Chivas USA are entering Thursday's MLS SuperDraft from a new position, as they won't have any selections in the first round this year (unless they trade up). As a result, they will need to scout well and fall into some luck in order to get impact players.

But despite the seemingly annual declaration that the draft class is not deep, history shows that MLS contributors can be found after the first round. Let's go through some of the recent names:

2013 (2nd round): LA Galaxy defenders Kofi Opare and Greg Cochrane, Real Salt Lake forward Devon Sandoval

2012 (2nd round): Chicago Fire defender Hunter Jumper, New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara, Philadelphia Union defender Raymon Gaddis, Real Salt Lake midfielder Sebastian Velasquez, Houston Dynamo midfielder Warren Creavalle

2011 (2nd round): Montreal Impact defender Jeb Brovsky (selected by Vancouver Whitecaps), New England Revolution defender Stephen McCarthy, Houston Dynamo midfielder Servando Carrasco (selected by Seattle Sounders), D.C. United defender Chris Korb; (3rd round): Columbus Crew midfielder Bernardo Anor, RSL forward Joao Plata (selected by Toronto FC)

2010 (2nd round): Sporting Kansas City defender Seth Sinovic (selected by New England), TFC defender Justin Morrow (selected by San Jose Earthquakes), San Jose defender Steven Beitashour

Even Chivas have gotten good value in the later rounds of the SuperDraft, most notably selecting Jonathan Bornstein in the fourth round in 2006, and Ben Zemanski in the third round in 2010.

So if this team wants to get cheap contributors, they could do worse than give this year's draft a go, even with the lower picks. The question, of course, is whether they will.
