Once a Goat: Victor Estupiñan scores in Copa Libertadores action

Estupiñan after his goal for Chivas in 2011. - Victor Decolongon

The one season wonder popped up in a major tournament this week.

Remember Victor Estupiñan? The forward from Ecuador drafted by Chivas USA in 2011? The guy who vowed to score 30 goals in his rookie season in MLS?

As it turned out, he scored just one goal in his MLS career, in his final game with Chivas. Following the 2011 season, he was back to Ecuador, where he bounced around for awhile before hitting some form last year with Deportivo Cuenca, scoring nine goals in 34 appearances for the club, which finished eighth and tenth, respectively in the short tournaments last year.

Due to his positive play, Estupiñan got a transfer to Deportivo Quito prior to the current season. He's only made one league appearance so far, but the team was involved in Copa Libertadores qualifying Wednesday night, and Estupiñan made the difference.

The 25-year-old caught a ball in the box on a poor clearance, and whipped the ball past everybody to score in a 1-0 home win over Brazilian club Botafogo.

Here's video of the goal. Nicely taken, if I do say so myself:

The result gives Deportivo Quito the edge in the two-leg tie, with Botafogo hosting the return leg February 5. The winner of the series moves on in the Copa Libertadores, South America's premier continental club tournament, to the group stage, where they would face Chilean side Union Española, Argentina's San Lorenzo, and fellow Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle.

Estupiñan may have a long way to go to notch 30 goals in a season in any league, but scoring in the Copa Libertadores shows the player may come good yet.
