We have another update on a recent rumor. Ives Galarcep tweeted Tuesday afternoon that Chivas USA are getting close to naming Colorado Rapids assistant coach Wilmer Cabrera their next head coach. Cabrera was first linked to the job a month ago, before LA Galaxy assistant coach Curt Onalfo became the frontrunner. Onalfo reportedly could not come to an agreement with Chivas, and Cabrera is apparently the leading candidate at the moment.
Interestingly, Cabrera's boss in Colorado, Oscar Pareja, is reportedly out the door with the Rapids, intent on becoming the FC Dallas coach either this season or next. Though it is possible Cabrera could therefore be in the running to take over Colorado's team, rumor has it that former Chivas USA coach Robin Fraser, currently an assistant coach with the New York Red Bulls, would be the top candidate for that job. In other words, we might be seeing a coaching carousel at work.
Last week, Chivas USA said they would be finalizing a candidate for the open coaching job within the next two weeks. Officially, it has been 44 days since Jose Luis Real officially ended his tenure as Chivas USA coach to become Chivas de Guadalajara's coach for a second time.
We'll keep you posted on this story as developments arise.
