Chivas USA announced Thursday that they have waived midfielder Carlo Chueca. The 20-year-old signed last summer with the Goats out of Belgium. A native of Peru, he had spent time in Chivas USA's Academy as a teenager before heading to Europe.
Chueca made a total of five appearances last season for Chivas, notching one assist in that span.
There could be several motivations to this move. It could be that Chivas needed a roster space. It could also be a a way for the new regime at the club to distance itself from the old regime. Paco Palencia and Jose Luis Real spoke very highly of Chueca, with Palencia at one point even including Chueca among the key contributors for Chivas in 2014, including him with names like Dan Kennedy and Erick Torres.
So it could be that Chueca is a victim of circumstance. Unfortunately for him, he can't go to Chivas de Guadalajara since he isn't Mexican, so he'll have to impress a new club now.
It could also be that Wilmer Cabrera deemed him surplus to requirements. We'll have to see if Chueca finds a good situation somewhere and blossoms into a good player. He is still very young, after all. But it won't be with Chivas USA.
