Chivas USA officially revealed yet another preseason trialist Thursday, announcing they have acquired Argentine forward Leandro Barrera on loan from Argentinos Juniors.
Barrera, 23, is a left-footed attacker who played on the wing with Chivas during the preseason. Though it looks like he was working up to match fitness during the Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson, he did set up Erick Torres' goal in the final match last Saturday in the 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake.
The third Argentine to join Chivas' roster this offseason, along with Mauro Rosales and Agustin Pelletieri, Barrera has spent his pro career prior to his arrival with just one team, Argentinos. He wasn't a regular starter for them, playing just 42 league matches, though he was a regular in the 2012 Inicial and 2013 Final seasons. He's scored three goals altogether in his Argentinos career, though if he can set up goals like he did against RSL, he could prove useful as a set-up man.
According to the release that Argentinos Juniors sent out regarding the loan last month, the loan is for a year, with an option to purchase Barrera. We'll see how he fits in with the Goats.
