Chivas USA acquire midfielder Martin Rivero from the Colorado Rapids

USA TODAY Sports

If he stays healthy, this could be a really big move for Chivas USA.

Chivas USA coach Wilmer Cabrera's connections are leading to roster moves once more, as the club announced on Thursday they have acquired midfielder Martin Rivero's MLS rights from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

Rivero, 24, played with the Rapids from 2012-13, while Cabrera was an assistant coach at the club. The Argentine is an attacking midfielder who had a very strong 2012 campaign, but persistent injury troubles sidelined him last season. Instead of taking the mantle as the team's playmaker, as projected, he was ultimately marginalized as the "Rapkids" emerged to be one of the league's surprising teams.

So this move comes as a high risk/high reward endeavor. If Rivero can stay healthy, he can very easily become a starter for the Goats, and he has the ability to both score and set up goals, so that could help Chivas bolster their attack tremendously. But if he continues to struggle with injuries, he may find it hard to get in a rhythm and find his way into the lineup. Still, I like this move, and think it's a pretty savvy one, should it pay off.

The club says he's available for Saturday's game against Portland, and it appears they phrased the acquisition in terms of his rights and not that he signed a deal or anything because he may be on loan from Argentine side Rosario Central, who he played for from 2008-11.

Rivero is the fourth Argentine to join the Goats this year, following fellow MLS vet Mauro Rosales and newcomers Agustin Pelletieri and Leandro Barrera.
