Once a Goat: Sacha Kljestan wins third straight league title with Anderlecht

Not too many players win three championships in a row.

A former Chivas USA player has found success abroad, once again. Former midfielder Sacha Kljestan, beloved by many CUSA fans, won his third straight league Belgian Pro League title with Anderlecht over the weekend. The title was something of a surprise, since Anderlecht looked to be well out of the race for most of the season, before roaring to life in the playoffs to take the title away from Standard Liege, who controlled proceedings for nearly all of the season.

The three-peat for Kljestan goes along with his Belgian Supercups from 2010 and 2012, as well as participating in the UEFA Champions League three times and the Europa League once. He's racking up quite the accomplishments in his career.

However...it must be said that this season was a rocky one for Kljestan. He didn't play in the league after March 30, though he was a regular fixture in the matchday 18 through the end of the campaign. Considering he was previously a regular starter, however, that's not really a good sign for a player who is 28, where one would expect he'd be at his peak.

Furthermore, probably in part because he hadn't distinguished himself in recent performances, and partly because he hadn't been playing for his club, Kljestan was not called up to the U.S. Men's National Team 30-man provisional World Cup squad by coach Jurgen Klinsmann. That means Kljestan will miss out on the World Cup once again, despite racking up 46 caps to date.

As we reported a couple weeks back, Kljestan may be on his way out of Anderlecht, and rumor had it out of Belgium that his destination could be the LA Galaxy. Those initial rumors have died down since, so either the parties are quietly putting a deal together behind the scenes, or there wasn't anything to them. I'd be inclined to believe it's the latter, though one never knows.

It does seem a solid bet Kljestan could be on the move this summer, but he could always opt to remain in Europe, maybe even Belgium. Regardless, congrats to Sacha on winning his latest title, and best of luck to him (but don't come back to play for the Galaxy, please).
