U.S. Open Cup: Chivas USA will play Carolina RailHawks June 14 in fourth round action

Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports

Chivas to face a familiar opponent, once again.

Following the third round of the U.S. Open Cup, which concluded on Wednesday, Chivas USA learned for certain which team they will face when they enter the tournament next month. They will take on the Carolina RailHawks on June 14 at 5 pm PT in Cary, North Carolina in their fourth round match-up, after the RailHawks defeated the Charlotte Eagles 2-0, with goals from Nazmi Albadawi and former Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Jun Marques Davidson.

That means the NASL's RailHawks and Chivas USA will meet for the third consecutive year in the U.S. Open Cup, with the teams splitting results in the previous two meetings, both of which were in North Carolina. The Goats won with a stoppage time PK for a 2-1 win in 2012, while the teams took the game to added extra time before Carolina blew Chivas away 3-1 last year.

Which team will take the honors in 2014? We'll find out in a couple weeks. On the bright side, perhaps, with the game coming in the midst of MLS' World Cup break, the fact that it is being held on a Saturday means the team will likely stay in rhythm, such as it is, instead of playing a midweek game like usual in the USOC.

But as I've written before, and I'll keep writing as long as they are in the tournament, this is Chivas USA's last best chance at a trophy under the current name. This organization needs to put everything they have into this competition.

We'll have more coverage of this game as it approaches.
