Once a Goat: Juan Pablo Angel scores to keep Atletico Nacional alive in quest for double

JPA back when he was scoring for the Goats. - Victor Decolongon

JPA is still playing, and still in the hunt for silverware on multiple fronts.

We haven't really caught up with former Chivas USA forward Juan Pablo Angel lately, who has been playing for his first team, Atletico Nacional of Colombia, since leaving the Goats after the 2012 season. He's not a young guy anymore, at 38, but JPA is still seeing some action and contributing to the team, which is pretty impressive considering how long he's been in the game (he made his pro debut waaaaaay back in 1993).

Angel started on Sunday for Atletico against Envigado in the Liga Postobon playoffs, and scored the 2-1 winner in the 75th minute, to go with his goal in the first leg, a 4-1 rout. The result from Sunday confirms Atletico Nacional's berth in the semifinals, where they'll face Santa Fe, beginning on Wednesday.

Here's video of JPA's latest goal:

In addition to the league charge, Nacional are also still alive in the Copa Libertadores, the premier club competition in South America. The Colombians knocked out defending champs Atletico Mineiro of Brazil (aka Ronaldinho's team) last week to move on to the quarterfinals. They will take on Defensor Sporting of Uruguay over two legs, beginning on Thursday.

At JPA's age, he isn't starting every game, but he has featured in three Copa Lib games this year, though he has yet to score. Still, barring injury, he will likely play some role in the tie. Atletico Nacional are attempting to become the first Colombian team to win the competition twice (the only other team from Colombia to win it is Once Caldas), all while trying to win the league, something that doesn't happen all that often in South America.

Best of luck to JPA and Atletico Nacional on their quest for the double. I'm not sure if Angel will be retiring after the season, but if they could lift either or both trophies, it would be a great way to end a distinguished career.
