Official: Chivas USA extend forward Erick "Cubo" Torres' loan to end of season

Back at you, man. - Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The star striker is staying put for the rest of this season.

Good news! Chivas USA announced on Tuesday that they have exercised the option to extend forward Erick Torres' loan from Chivas de Guadalajara through the end of the current season. The original terms of his loan, which began in July 2013, were for one year, though the apparent club option was written into the agreement at the time.

It's safe to say that the guaranteed return of Cubo is a boost for the Goats in the second half of the 2014 season. He led the team in scoring last season, despite only playing with them for four months, and again leads the team in scoring so far this season, with nine goals in 14 matches. His 16 career goals ranks him as the third-highest scorer in team history, only behind Ante Razov (30 goals) and Maykel Galindo and Justin Braun (24 each), despite playing a fraction of the games as those players. And he's quietly building a legacy around the league as well, in the pack of players chasing the Golden Boot this season, not to mention the fact that he's currently tied for the most goals scored in MLS history by a Mexican-born player, with cult hero Cuauhtemoc Blanco, and done in less than half of the appearances of the former Chicago Fire player.

What's interesting with this news is that former Chivas USA owner Jorge Vergara said on the day news broke that the league was purchasing the club from him that Torres would return to Chivas de Guadalajara this month. And with Cubo dropping hints in the press that he was keeping his options open but kept an eye on returning to Mexico at some point, it seemed possible that current Chivas USA team president Nelson Rodriguez's assertion that the club would likely extend the loan would be more tangled than most loan deals in MLS. But in this case, MLS got its way, and that's great news for Chivas USA and their fans.

It's also worth noting that Chivas USA reiterated in the release of this news that they have the option to buy Torres outright at the end of this season. I think that's important to highlight because most such releases, related to Chivas USA or any other team in the league, typically do not volunteer such information. Seems like a flag planted to ensure the team/league is going to try and prevent any shenanigans from the former owner and his other team in the future.

At any rate, glad you're sticking around, Cubo.
