Once a Goat in Brazil: USMNT finally beat Ghana at the World Cup

The USA finally broke through the curse of Ghana with a 2-1 victory in their 2014 World Cup opener on Monday.

Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders) wasted no time, literally, in putting his name in the history books with the 5th fastest goal in World Cup history, coming in at 29 seconds.

The USMNT did a superb job of keeping the pressure on even though Ghana had 10 percent more possession through both halves. A late goal from Andre Ayew tied the game and the US seem rattled and like the game was going to end in a draw, or worse for the Americans, until a late corner met John Brooks' head. Brooks came off the bench at the half and his goal gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead.

For now it seems Klinsmann has shut down skeptics with this must-win victory over Ghana. There were things to be concerned with but I don't feel it's anything to be overly worried with. We shall see if we see Jozy Altidore back in action who went out early with a hamstring injury. Klinsmann seems confident we will see Altidore back in the World Cup.

There was one player with Chivas USA ties involved in the game, although he didn't see any action. U.S. backup goalkeeper Brad Guzan was not called into action, as Tim Howard made two saves, both important ones, on the night. Still, even being a part of this game from the bench had to be special on some level.

The USMNT's next matchup is this Sunday at 3pm PT against Portugal, who will be looking for a win after their 4-0 loss to Germany.
