Goats at the World Cup: Marvin Chavez enters at the half in Honduras' final game in Brazil

Chavez got a solid runout in Honduras' final game, but the Catrachos couldn't get a result.

The two active Chivas USA players involved with the World Cup were in action on Wednesday. In one of the games, Honduras wrapped up their 2014 World Cup campaign with a 3-0 loss to Switzerland. A hat trick from Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri killed Los Catrachos' slim hopes of advancing from Group E, as Switzerland took the second knockout round spot in the group.

Chavez, who made his World Cup debut in Honduras' last game, a loss to Ecuador, came off the bench for the second straight game, this time at halftime for former Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza. Chavez nearly set up a goal in his time on the field, as Jerry Bengtson's header off the CUSA winger's cross was saved by Swiss GK Diego Benaglio in the 80th minute. Bengtson, still with the New England Revolution despite never really settling in, had two strong chances to score on the day, but just couldn't get the ball in the back of the net.

The result means that Honduras finish in last place in the group, with three losses in three played. Despite entering the tournament with optimism, they will unfortunately finish this World Cup without advancing from the group stage once again, nor will they improve on their 30th overall placing in 2010, as they will finish 31st overall this time around.

On the bright side from a Chivas USA perspective, Chavez will be back with the Goats very soon, perhaps as soon as this weekend, though I wouldn't expect him to suit up against Real Salt Lake on Saturday. The big question, of course, is whether he can shake off the disappointment of Honduras' performance in Brazil quickly and be ready to try and help CUSA turn around their season.

Either way, congratulations to Marvin for playing in the World Cup, and we look forward to seeing you in the red-and-white again very soon!
