"Once a Goat" in Brazil: USMNT lose to Germany, but advance to the Round of 16

Guzan: Celebrating as the USMNT get at least one more game. - Michael Steele

Not the Americans' best day, but prior work means they get through to play another day.

The U.S. Men's National Team had one more game to play in Group G play at the World Cup, and on Thursday, they took to the field to complete their slate in the so-called Group of Death, against tournament favorite Germany. While a win or draw would have guaranteed their passage to the knockout stage, the Americans couldn't manage to muster that in rainy Recife, instead falling 1-0 to the Germans behind a second half goal by Thomas Muller.

Despite the result, spirits are high, especially among U.S. fans, as they still advance to the Round of 16, as Portugal's 2-1 win over Ghana ensured the Americans would be moving on.

The former Chivas USA player involved in the proceedings, in a sense, was of course USMNT goalkeeper Brad Guzan. As in the first two group stage matches, Guzan was the backup to incumbent starter Tim Howard, and did not feature in the game. While it would be nice to see him in action on the world's biggest stage, it's not a surprise to see him continuing to serve as the No. 2, and Howard has played well so far in the tournament, so there's little justification to make a switch at the moment.

The Americans will next be in action on Tuesday, against the winner of Group H, which appears to be Belgium, though that game is ongoing. The game will be at 1 pm PT on ESPN and Univision.
