International update: Costa Rica draws 1-1 with Ireland in final World Cup tune-up

The Ticos battle back with 10 men to get a result.

Costa Rica concluded their World Cup friendly slate on Friday with a meeting against the Republic of Ireland at PPL Park, drawing 1-1. Kevin Doyle opened the scoring for Ireland in the 18th minute with a long header off a nice diagonal cross from Marc Wilson.

Following that, the Ticos went down a man when Columbus Crew defender Giancarlo Gonzalez picked up a yellow, then quickly a red card in the 42nd minute for a elbow to the face of Doyle, who was bloodied by the encounter. According to ESPN, it is unknown if Gonzalez may have to sit out some or all of Costa Rica's upcoming World Cup group stage games as a result of the play.

10-man Costa Rica then knotted the match in the 64th minute through a PK by Celso Borges. Just three minutes later, Ireland had the chance to go up again through LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane, but his PK was saved by backup Costa Rican 'keeper Patrick Pemberton.

Former Chivas USA defender Michael Umaña once again started and played the full 90 minutes in this game for Costa Rica. It seems at this point that barring injury, Umaña is a lock to start for his country in Brazil.

Speaking of which, the Central Americans' next match will be a week from today, in the World Cup, when they take on Uruguay in the Group D opener. The game will air at 12 pm PT on ABC.
