International update: USMNT beat Nigeria 2-1 in final World Cup tune-up

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Americans wrap up their prep with a fine performance.

The U.S. Men's National Team finished their pre-World Cup friendlies on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Nigeria in Jacksonville, Florida.

The main headline coming out of this match is that Jozy Altidore (Sunderland A.F.C) finally found the back of the net since last December, scoring both goals. The first came in the 32nd minute off a tap-in from Fabian Johnson's pass, while the second was scored in the 68th minute when Michael Bradley sent a lob to Altidore, who then beat a Nigeria defender to score.

Victor Moses scored Nigeria's goal in the 86th minute on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box by Matt Besler a minute earlier.

This win, and the goals, are exactly what the USMNT wanted right before heading into the World Cup -- Jozy coming off a terrible season with Sunderland scoring twice for his country in the last friendly before things really count. Here's hoping this isn't a fluke and he can be the goal machine he was in Holland.

Former Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan didn't make it off the bench in this game, but he is definitely first off the bench if anything were to happen to starter Tim Howard.

The U.S. begins their World Cup on June 16 against Ghana at 3 pm PT. The game will be on ESPN.
