Chivas USA defender Bobby Burling out 3-4 weeks after knee surgery

The veteran went under the knife, but it appears he won't be away for too long.

During the broadcast of Chivas USA's win last weekend over the Vancouver Whitecaps, TSN's crew noted that CUSA defender Bobby Burling was out of the lineup because he had torn his MCL and would be out 3-4 weeks. Since that was news, considering it wasn't reported elsewhere or included in the injury report, it was quite a surprise, but explained why Eriq Zavaleta started in place of Burling against Vancouver.

On Tuesday, Chivas USA confirmed the news, adding that Burling underwent surgery to repair the torn MCL, which was suffered in the Goats' 1-0 win over the Montreal Impact the week before. The good news is the recovery time is not extensive, as the team also pegged a 3-4 week absence in their release on the matter.

Fortunately, team captain Carlos Bocanegra remains in good shape, having missed only one game so far this season (and that was mostly to rest the veteran during a double game week), and Zavaleta has shown to be a capable third option at center back. Additionally, Andrew Jean-Baptiste appears to be healthy once again after surgery of his own, so CUSA have at least some cover while Burling rehabs from the surgery.

The team also announced on Tuesday that midfielder Martin Rivero, who tore his ACL last month, also underwent knee surgery, and will be out an estimated six-to-eight months.
