Preview: Chivas USA vs. Montreal Impact, July 5, 2014

USA TODAY Sports

Will three be the magic number?

Can Chivas USA pull out the unicorn trick and win three whole games in a row? We'll find out if they can do it for the first time since 2009 when they host the Montreal Impact on Saturday night (7:30 pm PT, TWC Deportes/tickets still available). The Goats are riding high after beginning their first winning streak in over a year, after beating the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday. The Impact, meanwhile, are coming off two games last week, picking up four points in that span, including a 3-0 win over the Houston Dynamo in their last game. So can Chivas keep the wins train going? We'll see very soon.

Let's preview this match!

Tale of the Tape:

Chivas USA: 16 points (4-7-4), 8th in Western Conference, 16th place overall; Goal Difference: -10 (16/26); Last five matches: W-W-D-L-L

Montreal Impact: 14 points (3-7-5), 10th in Western Conference, 19th place overall; Goal Difference: -10 (16/26); Last five matches: W-D-L-W-L

Can Chivas stay unbeaten vs. Impact: This is just the third MLS meeting between these clubs, with the Goats bringing in a 1-0-1 record against the Quebec side. We've seen them break long winless streaks against two opponents in the last week -- can they extend this particular team-specific streak against Montreal? The Impact are in a very similar situation to CUSA this season, with a new coach, tons of roster movement, and losses that have piled up. But also like Chivas, Montreal have looked better as of late, and may not be the pushovers they were earlier this season. And considering the likelihood of lineup rotation for Wilmer Cabrera's side given the short rest, Chivas may not be in the same rhythm they've been the last two games if enough changes take place. Still, this has to be seen as a winnable game for the home side, and three more points can put them right back in the Western Conference mix.

Why Chivas will win this match: The Impact seem to have really regressed this season, and while Jack McInerney is playing quite well, Marco Di Vaio has been nowhere near his 2013 form. Meanwhile, Erick Torres is on another scoring run and the defense has put up two straight shutouts. If the Goats can play steady once again, take care of the chance(s) they get, and limit Montreal's attack, they should be in great shape to grab a win. It seems to me that the key here will be to keep the scoring down, as that would probably favor them more. If they can, then the rare multigame winning streak will be on.

Why the Impact will win this match: Ok, so they have identical goals for and against totals as Chivas, but they've been involved in a couple of shootouts this season, and are much more liable to put up several goals in this game than CUSA. If they can score two, they'll probably win. Based on what we've seen with this Chivas USA side, it basically boils down to that. And since Chivas haven't played all that well in their recent wins, despite grabbing full points, means Montreal will know that major holes in the Goats' game persist, and will certainly feel like they need to win, and beyond that, can get their first win against Chivas USA.

Why this game will end in a draw: Two of the teams at or near the bottom of the stands, one coming off short rest, and both dealing with a fair amount of roster turnover at the moment. A draw seems like a solid possibility. While it would be better to keep racking up wins, for obvious reasons, certainly a tie wouldn't be the worst result, if it continues an unbeaten run.

Notable absences:

Chivas: Thomas McNamara (ACL tear), Martin Rivero (ACL tear)

Impact: Sanna Nyassi (ankle)
